Lynfield Recreation Centre Renovation
Client: Auckland City Council
Architect: ASC Architects
Area: 710m2
Value: $1.4 million
Completion: February 2009
The Lynfield Recreation Centre has an indoor sports stadium and four squash courts, as well as a fitness centre offering exercise and aerobics programmes. A major challenge for Gibson O’Connor was the need for the YMCA to continue operating the busy centre throughout the extensive renovation.
Gibson O’Connor constructed an 80m temporary road through a reserve to provide safe access for tradespeople and equipment. And when the existing roof began to leak during heavy winter rainfall, Gibson O’Connor raised it to increase the pitch, adding a watertight membrane.
The completed centre includes an impressive saligna timber canopy, a sweeping curved wall in the reception area, motorised oval skylights, and a staircase that involved the work of six different trades.
With Gibson O’Connor’s experienced planning and collaborative approach, up to 25 tradesmen at any one time were able to work safely and efficiently while the centre continued to serve the local community. Public safety and convenience remained paramount throughout the project, and no YMCA activities were interrupted. As a result, this stunning facility was completed on time and on budget.
