University of Auckland School of Engineering
Client: University of Auckland
Architect: Aston Mitchell
Form of contract: Tendered
Area: 4,566m2
Cost: $7 million
Completion: September 2006
Project Brief:
This landmark project includes the tallest hung glass wall and the widest smoke curtains in New Zealand. The building is also notable for its exposed architectural elements. Areas of the old and new construction were exposed so that student engineers can see many of the structural components.
The commitment to a quality build and attention to detail is reflected in the fact that even when the building was roofless for six weeks, Gibson O’Connor staff spent several hours each night making sure there were no gaps in the protective covering. This meant more than 130,000 library books, many irreplaceable, were protected from the weather.
