Remuera Fire Station
Client: New Zealand Fire Service
Architect: Maunsell Ltd
Area: 529m2
Architects Value: $1.6 million
Completion: March 2005
Lots of people in Remuera loved the old 1920s fire station, so replacing with an even more iconic building required plenty of attention to detail. Completing the project in just seven months is one of Gibson O’Connor’s proudest achievements.
From day one, the project aroused much local interest. At one point, when 75% of the old station had been removed, leaving just the original façade, it looked more like a movie set than a building site. Locals were wondering what would happen next, and fire engines continually pulled up across the road so fire crews could check on progress of their new home.
Concrete precast wall panels and ColorSteel corrugated wall cladding replaced the old brick and concrete building as promised, on time and within budget. But it was Gibson O’Connor’s legendary quality and craftsmanship that led Auckland East fire chief Russell Wood to declare emphatically that the new Remuera Fire Station “has exceeded everyone’s expectations.”
